Evaluation

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our film would most probably be for teenagers from the age 15 upto very early twenties. Our piece would definitley suit people who have a great interest in the horror genre but as the film will have blood and gore in it, it will have to be shown to an older audience. The film could be certified as a 15 as long as the blood and gore scenes later on in the film are toned down and aren't over exaggerated which could result in the film being an 18. As the conventions of the film are associated with the horror genre, we will need to be careful with what props, weapons, etc are used as some props can be seen as to malicious and may be to heavy for the certificate given so will need to be toned down to stay at a 15.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I found that it was quite easy to attract our audience as we could easily relate to teenagers by doing a production in a school with students and young staff being the cast. By doing this it ment our piece would convey the way a typical school day is and would appeal to our audience. Our conventions of the horror genre like the screaming and squelching also attract a young audience giving the impression the school is haunted by a girl that died there giving that edge.

Audience Questions

After finally finishing our filming and editing we were told to show the opening of hour film to an audience of 5 or 6 and see whether or not they liked/disliked it, what they would change, whether they recognised the genre etc. The questions are as followed:

1) Did you feel engaged in the first 2 minutes of the film and want to watch the rest?

2) Do you feel there was continuity in the opening 2 mintues?

3) Were you able to see what genre the film was and did it include the genres typical elements?

4) Did you feel that the editing in the film created the correct mood for the type of film it was? Do you feel this was successful?

5) Out of these four, which do you think our film would allow an audience member to do and why?

The Script

Here I have the script of the play that Daniel looked for and is from the play 'A Death of a Salesman'. The start of the script had to be cut out which Me, Liam and Kendall acted out but as it made the play to long it HAD to be cut out.

The FEAR-tre.

Int. Location 1- day.


Mike: Okay we’ve still got some scenes left to run through.

Barbara: Okay which scene first?

Mike: How about the scene starting with Charley, "Everything all right?"

James: Okay ill take charley. Barbara you take Happy and mike you can have Willy.

( Barbara and Mike nod)

(pause)

Everything all right?

Barbara: Yeah, Charley, everything’s…

Mike: What’s the matter?

James: I heard some noise. I thought something happened. Can’t we do something about these walls? You sneeze in here, in my house hats blow off!

Mike: That’s seems to be coming along nicely, how about a scene with Linda and Willy. Barbara you play Linda.

(James leaves the stage)

Barbara: Willy, dear? Willy?

Mike: I was right!

Barbara: Did you have some cheese? It's very late, darling. Come to bed, heh?

Mike: (Looking up)Gotta break your neck to see a star in this yard.

Barbara: Do you mind if I try my scene now? You know my little solo bit?

Mike: Go ahead, we’ll watch from the auditorium.

Barbara: (clears throat) Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Tonight we are going to present to you our rendition of "a death of a salesmen."

(A creak is heard)

(Barbara pauses)

Our cast may be small but we hope you enjoy tonight.

(Another creak)

(Barbara looks up)

Now I hope your sitting comfortably, in our newly built theatre. And so without…(creak)

(looks up)

(screams loudly)

End of scene.


Int. Location 2- day

(Funky music is playing, and the two girls are dancing. The teacher walks in and sits down but says nothing. The third girl joins the routine.)

Mr. Gibb: (Clapping) Well done girls that was brilliant. A couple more hours practice and you’ll be… Nah I’m kidding, it’s looking great.

Ashley: Cheers sir

Jessica: Yeah, cheers sir.

Sarah: (Smiles)

(Mr Gibb leaves the theatre)

Ashley: Hey jess, that’s the new girl isn’t it?

Jessica: I dunno; don’t think I’ve seen her before.

Ashley: Im sure she is, she looks so pathetic and helpless.

Jessica: (laughs)

Ashley: Hmm maybe we can have some fun jess. Hey you, new girl!

Sarah: Who me?

Ashley: Yeah, come here we wanna chat. (Sarah walks over) So we’re Ashley and Jessica (points at Jessica) So you’re new right? You know this theatre is haunted?

Sarah: Err no it isn’t don’t be ridiculous.

Ashley: It is honestly, a girl was killed in here 50 years ago! She fell down a trap door, lost her legs and then her head got cut off!

Sarah: (Shocked) R..r..really?

Ashley: No (Her and Jessica laugh) But there’s an old rumour that someone…(the lights go off) What the…(A door slams shut)

End scene

(The next scene shows the title and a black screen with the sound of a school bell being heard.)

Filming Process

As a group we had to firstly see when the school theatre would be free to use to do our filming. If we were unable to get a free time to use the theatre then we would have had to change our setting for our film opening and could have resulted in a rushed production.

After we had found out that the theatre was only free wednesday morning, we decided that the best option was to do some of the filming after school as well to make sure we didn't rush any of it and spoil the production. We started our filming mid february, which can be seen on your shooting schedule, and have nearly completed all the filming. Before starting our filming we had to find a script to use which Daniel opted to find which he did very well, finding one from the film "Death of a Salesman". We then ran through the script to decide who was saying what and came to the conclusion that Daniel would film and me, Liam and Kendall would act.

While filming we all realised that our film was supposed to be set in the 1950's at first, then move back to the present day, the problem being that we were all wearing nowadays clothes and didn't have any 1950's clothes. We asked the drama teachers if we could borrow some clothes but we weren't allowed, so we had a dilema and had to come up with a solution. We thought that the best way to get around the problem was to change the idea of being in the 1950's to closer date of the 90's, 1998 to be specific. This way our clothes wouldn't look to out of proportion and as a result worked well. Also our idea of bringing the start of the film to 1998 ment the "up-to-date" style of the theatre wouldn't look out of place either.

When it came down to editing, again, we left the more technical stuff to Dan as he was in his element, but the rest of us gave our views and opinions and the film gelled well together. Also we needed to find music to fit into our film. We all searched the web looking for free copyright music and after a while found the perfect music. Again Dan edited the music into the film which he did brilliantly.

One thing that has occured, meaning we are going to have to re-film parts of the film, is the lighting. When editing, the lighting went funny and there wasn't anything we could do to change it, so the lack of continuity in the film means we are going to have to re-film parts of it. Because on the 26th and 27th of February there were school performance shows, the background in the theatre changed so it means we are going to have to hopefully find the right time to re-film when the background is back to the way we need it.

Final Title















Here are our final designs for our title. The top one will appear first and then the second one will fade in and turn red then slide off the screen like blood dripping down. This will add the tension and fear into our audience that we want to create.

The Treatment

As a group we have decided to do horror as our genre. Our film starts off with girls rehearsing a play in the theatre in 1959 and one girl mysteriously gets killed. The film then reverts back to the present and shows girls rehearsing a play nowadays and then another girl gets mysteriously killed by the so called “Ghost”.

NB: The film begins with the name of the production companies and distributors etc fading up onto a black screen.

Our film starts off by fading into a typical day at school with female students rehearsing for their school play. We then see the date fade across the bottom of the screen. As they come to the end of rehearsing the scene, the drama teacher watching asks for the girls to stop and to prepare to start rehearsing the next scene of the play. One of the girls starts to talk about a ghost that once haunted the school for many years. This starts to creep out the new girl of the school and she starts to get a little worried. The other girls walk off stage to prepare for the next scene she stays on stage and the worried girl stays on stage to do a solo piece. We then hear a creak above the stage and we zoom onto the girls face as she looks up in apprehension of what she’s just heard above her. The screen then blacks out and we hear a squishing sound of the girl being killed by a mysterious object followed by a violent scream by the other girls… the title of the film scrolls up the black screen, then drips back down turning red like a blood effect.

The next scene starts with the camera focused on the theatre lights and then pans down onto some girls rehearsing for a play. We then see “50 years later” fade across the screen and then a teacher enters the theatre. The teacher watches the rehearsal by the the girls and applauds them on a good rehearsal.

The Descent

I decided that watching the opening to the horror film 'The Descent' would enable me to analyse what the audience would derive from watching the first 5 minutes and whether they would be able to guess what genre film it is. The film is a horror and as a group we decided that we would choose the genre horror for our piece of coursework.

First off we start with the credits of the film, which are shown one by one in a spotlight effect that fades across then clears in one motion, on a black background. The spotlight effect emphasises the actors and actresses names that may show a light in a dark place, reflecting the image of what the film may be like.

Afterwards it cuts into a long shot of a clear blue sky and the tops of trees. Also we here the diegetic sound of laughter and shouting which then immediately cuts into a mid shot of three women white water rafting. While the women are rafting it cuts to a high angle shot of the rapids that the women are going to face next, which look rough and distressing that might hint that there will be an accident or something bad going to happen to the women. While the women are rafting it cuts to a mid shot of a little girl and which seems apparent, her dad. The girl shouts down “mummy, mummy” to the women showing us that one of the women is her mum, and the girl and dad wave down to them all.
